Hi, I'm Darren, the Chief Instructor, Managing Director of TKL Leisure Ltd, a British Canoeing Paddlesport Instructor, and a local boy through and through, I have been paddling for well over 35 years with extensive experience of the Exeter Canal, Plymouth Sound and the local rivers. With many years teaching experience, I am also a qualified emergency field medic, and hold the following tickets -
BC Paddlesport Instructor (Kayaks)
BC Foundation Safety and Rescue (Kayaks & Paddleboards)
RYA Personal Watercraft (PWC) Proficiency
RYA Marine Radio Operator
CAA Aviation Radio Operator
SJA First Aid at Work
SJA Medical Gases (Oxygen and Entonox)
SJA AED Defibrillation.
I will soon also have the RYA Personal Watercraft Instructor, and PWC Rescue Certificates.
I started kayaking whilst still at school which inspired me to join the local canoeing club, the Port of Plymouth Canoe Association. When I moved to Farnborough in 1996, I continued kayaking on the River Blackwater, and the canals and lakes of the Blackwater Valley. I then came back to Devon three years later, taking a new posting with the Driving Standards Agency as an ADI instructor and examiner. I left the DSA eleven years later to set up and run TKL Leisure Ltd and the TK Mission Adventure Group.
When I'm not working at TK Watersports, I‘m on my day job with Royal Mail. When not working you’ll find me on the water or in the air as I'm also a CAA private pilot on single engine prop aircraft, or tinkering about in my award winning rose garden!
I’m available in the evenings, at weekends and on bank holidays. British Canoeing coach number 472691
I'm Gavin. I’m one of the Directors of TKL Leisure Ltd. I first learnt to kayak as a youngster, on Drakes island. I've been a regular Plymouth sound paddler for the last 35 years. I've also paddled in Arctic Norway and around the Canaries and the far corners of the British Isles. My paddling preference is using sea kayaks. More surfing and rock hopping orientated than a2b distance paddling. I'm an active member of Port of Plymouth Canoe Association, and lead recreational and sea kayak paddling trips for the club. I'm also hold the following -
BC Sea Kayak Leader
RYA Powerboat Level 2
RYA Powerboat Instructor
RYA Marine Radio Operator
RYA Safety Boat Captain
Emergency First Aid
and cover a lot of swim events.
I've been lucky to paddle with orcas and humpbacks in Norway and Hammerheads and Loggerheads in warmer waters. Can't promise aquatic wildlife in Plymouth sound but if anything is around, I know where they're likely to be spotted, and at what times they generally make an appearance.
I’m the deputy chief instructor at TK Watersports™ and I conduct our introduction to paddlesport courses. Outside of TK Watersports™, I work in the building trade. I’m available weekdays except Thursdays and at weekends.
When it comes to kayaking, you name it, former SAS instructor and world record holder Pete Bray’s done it! One of the most experienced kayakers you’ll ever meet, Pete is the third person to paddle solo across the Atlantic, but he’s the first to have paddled West to East, from the USA to Ireland without using sails, and he carried out the trip, SOLO! We’re pleased to have Pete as part of the team and he’s our Head of Training, keeping our instructors and guides trained and up to date.
Pete also teaches outdoor survival skills holding regular camps on Dartmoor and classes in mountaineering. He also has a passion for motorcycling and loves time riding his Triumph!
Pete even has his own Wikipedia page, lucky man!
Pete is available by prior booking only.
